William Hayne Waring enlisted in the Confederate Army with the rank of Corporal with Hampton’s Legion Company D on July 17, 1861 at Columbia, S.C. This unit consolidated with the 4th Battalion South Carolina, Capt. Boykin’s Company, South Carolina Calvary; & Capt. Lipscomb’s Company, South Carolina to form the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry. He was promoted to Sergeant on January 1862 (Co. D). He was then promoted to a 2nd Lieutenant on August 1862 (2nd S.C. Cavalry).

He fought with Hampton (Jeb Stuart) in the 2d SC Cavalry. As you know he is buried in St. Paul’s, and there is a Confederate symbol on his grave. I have a lot of info (SC Archives-Confererate records, a copy of Butler and His Calvary with mention of Wm. Hayne’s bravery at Brandy Station, and info on the men in the SC Cavalry, etc...)

The artillery battalion became separate and independent companies some time prior to August 25, 1862, about the date when the Legion was reorganized. The infantry battalion was increased to a regiment November 16, 1862, by the additional two companies I and K, which had been formed by the consolidation of the 13th Battalion South Carolina Infantry, by S.O. No. 239 Hdqrs Army of Northern Virginia dated November 11, 1862. The infantry regiment was transferred to cavalry service about March 1864 and it was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Va. April 10, 1865 as Hampton Legion Infantry, South Carolina Volunteers.
