Elizabeth is described as large, fat, and very dark. She claimed to be of “Black Dutch” ancestry. She met Aaron Tate when she was moving house with her parents, and they were in camp. Aaron happened by, saw her, fell in love, and following a whirlwind courtship, they were married. In later life she grew red chin whiskers several inches long, which she had the habit of curling around her fingers.
In late life, Elizabeth would come to visit and would bring her cows with her, as well as her feather beds and furniture, and “took charge of the household.” She would boil washpots of corn to feed the cattle. Informant remembers that he had to “wheedle” her if he wanted a piece of bread between meals.
