Was willed by his brother, Charles McDowell...one brown broad cloth coat and one beaver hat and one pair of snow boots. Emigrated about 1741 to Winchester, Virginia, where he purchased land from his brother, Charles. He was a Captain in the French & Indian War.
Joseph left will March 16, 1770. Probated November 1771. Exr: wife & sons Hugh & Charles. Witnesses: Philip Price, Abram Scott, Joseph Dobson. Was a weaver and planter. Son Joseph to have land on Silver Creek. Daughters to have £5 each. (Rowan County, North Carolina Will Abstracts v. 1, 1753-1805.)
