I spent a couple of hours tonight working on T’s new-to-her computer, an old Compaq Presario, trying to lick it into enough shape to be usable. The current challenge is trying to get it to agree to accept this 8.4GB hard disk I want to put in as the C: drive. The BIOS is so old that it has no idea what to do with drives that size, so it’s reporting the drive as 530MB. Samsung’s translation software can deal with that, but it’s going to blow away the partitions and lose all the data on it in the process, so now I’ve got to see if I can persuade my workstation, which is SCSI all down the line, to accept an IDE drive for long enough to copy off the data files. After which I can go in and re-partition with a clear conscience.
