This morning we got up to a house with interior temperatures at 65/18 degrees. This is not normal; indoor temp at that hour should be 77/25 degrees. The air conditioner’s programmable thermostat firmly insisted the temperature was 79/26 degrees and that it was “holding” at that temperature. I turned off the A/C and established, with a little poking around, that the thermostat had failed (after only three years, which vexed me), so we made do with the ceiling fans the remainder of the day, which wasn’t much hardship. Late in the afternoon I went over to Home Depot, bought another thermostat (for $50, which was the cheapest fully programmable thermostat to be had), programmed it, and installed it, working in nearly 90/32 degree heat with no lights (all power had to be off while I was working) and in a particularly hard-to-reach location. Fortunately, it only took fifteen or twenty minutes to re-connect everything, and now, an hour and a half later, temps are down to 83/28.
