Florida governor Jeb Bush has proposed to abolish the Florida State Library. The 2003-2004 Florida budget, released by the governor’s office on January 21, would eliminate all funding for the state library, lay off its 55 employees, and transfer its collections to Florida State University, which has stated that it already has insufficient room for its own collection, never mind absorbing the 10.7 shelf miles of the FSL collections, and is utterly unable to accept or to care for FSL’s holdings. The governor has also refused to increase FSU’s funding to cover the additional cost of housing and caring for the FSL collections.
