Or I will be as soon as I get the contract document from Holt, Rinehart. The editor with whom my editor-friend at HRW has been trying to hook me up called to say that the project she’d previously wanted me for has been taken off the shelf and dusted off, and she’s requested the Powers to draft a contract for me to do some more re-tellings.
This bunch of stories will be for fourth and fifth-grade literature textbooks, re-tellings of selections (I won’t know just what selections until later) not to exceed 1,200 words each. For this they’ll pay me $25 an hour, based on their standard production rate of 475 words per hour. (Don’t ask me how they came up with the word rate, because I don’t know either, but that’s what they use.) That adds up to $60 to $75 per story, as L figured it, so it won’t make for a full-time income, but I still get paid for writing and that pleases me.
